Monroe County in New York State has its county seat in Rochester. In terms of economy Rochester is second to New York City. Rochester is the third most densely populated city in the state. In a nationwide survey in 2007, Rochester was ranked as the sixth most livable city in America. It has also received top rating for quality of living in metropolitan areas.
Rochester city was founded by Colonel Nathanial Rochester who purchased a hundred acres along the Genesee River. Rochester earned the nickname city of flour in 1838 after it became the largest flour producing city. When the flour business moved west, the nursery business started and the city was named city of flower. Major companies like Eastman Kodak and Bausch & Lomb established their offices in Rochester when industrial activity started after the civil war. Even today some of the top Fortune 1000 companies are based in Rochester. Rochester also has the best public school system in the country.
The local Zweigle Company launched a local variant of the hotdog called white hot in Rochester. The garbage plate is another famous cuisine of Rochester. Rochester is the headquarters for Birds Eye, the famous frozen food company.
Olden days neighborhoods have been well preserved in Rochester. A majority of whites followed by blacks are the main races living in Rochester. There are some other races that live in Rochester as well.
Some fine educational institutions including colleges and universities are based in Rochester. University of Rochester is ranked as the 35th best university in the country.
Rochester has some of the best cultural and recreational facilities, besides having well maintained Victorian buildings and top educational institutions. Some world famous cultural institutions like the Garth Fagan dance, Rochester philharmonic orchestra, George Eastman house and several museums are located in Rochester. Golf courses, baseball and football clubs dot the city. Ice hockey is a favorite sport that is played here. There are seven professional teams in Rochester
Bars, restaurants and night clubs operate till late making nightlife quite entertaining. There are plenty of shopping malls in Rochester as well. Rochester is an attractive city for tourists. Rochester also has some beautiful parks.
Rochester has a fair share of festivals that start late spring and throughout summer. The Lilac festival is a very big tourist attraction and more than 500,000 visitors throng to it annually. Rochester is linked by air, road and rail with the rest of America and there is a ferry service that links it to Ontario in Canada.
Rochester is a popular and thriving city in New York.
