Self storage has grown in popularity in recent decades as more and more people use self storage units to hold their belongings during a move or other transitional period. Even a death in the family can create the need for extra storage space. Enter the storage unit.
Self storage facilities generally permit their customers to store anything that is nonperishable, nontoxic and nonhazardous. You are not allowed to sleep or live inside your self storage unit. You can lease a self storage unit in one of a variety of sizes, depending on your space requirements. The units are generally constructed with corrugated metal and are windowless, with either a suspended ceiling or chain link fence material closing off the top and a rolling metal door closing off the entire unit. You provide the lock. Some self storage facilities will also employ surveillance cameras, security guards, individual door alarms and a keypad entry system for added protection.
If you live in a rural or a suburban area, youve probably noticed self storage facilities that consist of multiple rows of single story buildings separated by driving lanes. This traditional form of self storage is ventilated, but not climate controlled. Newer facilities are climate controlled. City dwellers can take advantage of multiple floor self storage facilities with elevators and freight lifts that help renters transport their belongings between floors.
Self storage units serve a variety of purposes. The first thing that comes to mind is storage during a household move. You cant always obtain access to your new home when you move out of your old one and need someplace to store your belongings. Self storage units are the ideal solution. Are you remodeling? A self storage unit will store the contents of the room or rooms in question until youre finished. Self storage units also work great for storing a college students possessions in between school terms.
You must keep in mind when renting a self storage unit that the contract you enter into with the facility is as legally binding as any other form of lease agreement. Keep your lease payments current, or you risk losing your possessions at auction. Self storage facility owners may, under law, place a lien on your possessions for nonpayment of your lease and sell them at auction, so be sure to keep your payments current! You will also be responsible for the balance of the lien if auction proceeds do not raise enough money to cover the facilitys losses.
