Rochester New York is the state's third highest populated city, behind New York City and the city of Buffalo. The area's economy is the second largest in the state, behind the New York City metro area. Rochester New York is in Monroe County, but the area's growth has extended the metropolitan area to include parts of several surrounding counties as well. Rochester New York is located in the western area of the state and the area is home to slightly more than 1,000,000 residents.
Rochester New York generally does well in rankings of quality places to live. The Places Rated Almanac recently placed Rochester New York sixth in the most livable city category. In 2007, the magazine Expansion Management gave Rochester New York its top ranking in quality of life in metro areas with populations over 1 million. The same study ranked the Rochester public schools as the sixth best in the nation. In addition, a 2010 Forbes ranking rated Rochester New York as the third best area to raise families in.
Rochester New York has some notable former residents. Frederick Douglass founded an abolitionist newspaper called The North Star there in 1847. This former slave and antislavery advocate became a key symbol and face of the equality movement. Women's rights advocate Susan B. Anthony also called Rochester New York her home. Several companies started in Rochester New York as well, such as Xerox, The Gannett Newspaper Company, Bausch & Lomb and Eastman Kodak.
Rochester New York has many cultural features, including the highly rated Seneca Park Zoo, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, the Strasenburgh Planetarium and the Geva Theatre Center. In addition, the area is home to the Eastman School of Music, one of the nation's top musical institutes. Rochester New York also provides access to many ice rinks, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and recreational centers. Festivals can be found in Rochester New York throughout the year, including the Lilac Festival in May, the Rochester International Jazz Festival each June and the Cold Rush Winter Celebration.
Rochester New York has a vast number of cultural activities and sporting events to enjoy. The region is large enough to provide diversity and variety while being enough distance from New York City to provide a less busy feel. Frequently rated as a strong family-oriented, livable city, Rochester New York is considered a fun and safe area to visit or live.
