Moving storage makes it tremendously easy to move house, or simply store your possessions. However, if you are used to packing moving vans, you will need to learn a slightly different way to pack moving storage effectively. If you have never packed a storage container before, read these tips before you start packing.
In a moving van, all the heaviest items should be at the front of the van, packed against the cab, to make the van easier and safer to drive and to make it less likely that heavy items will fall on lighter items. Moving storage, on the other hand, does not have a "forward" or a "backward." Instead, it is intended to be shifted, lifted, turned, and stacked, so any moving container could be anywhere in the van or storage room. Focus on making the moving storage unit itself well balanced by evenly distributing the weight of your belongings across the floor of the container. Put the heaviest items on the bottom and the lightest items on the top to make the storage container more stable.
Fill in every empty space you can find, even the smallest crannies. A little room to shake can add up to big damage. Use packing peanuts in boxes, but do not pour them loose into the container unless you have enough to fill the container. Otherwise, they will just settle to the bottom and leave your belongings unprotected. Instead, use towels, blankets, pillows, and other soft, washable furnishings. When you are done, try to shift the boxes, and if they move at all, add more padding.
If the moving storage container is large enough, you may be able to use rope to secure your belongings instead. Divide the container into sections, using the arrangement of eyehooks in the container as a guide, and fill each section completely. Rope it down, then move on to the next section. Use as much rope as you need, and do not worry about using too much. Also make sure you know how to tie non slip knots beforehand, or you may open your container at the end of the move to find that all the ropes slackened and your belongings are in a disorganized pile.
As you pack the moving storage, remember to concentrate the weight on the bottom, not at the front. Pad everything until nothing can move, or lash everything down with rope. If you follow this advice, your things will be delivered to your new address in the same condition you put them into the unit. Enjoy how easy moving storage makes your move!
