We recently remodeled our small row house in the city. We initially hoped to begin the project two years before it actually was able to start. The city permit process took a lot longer than we originally anticipated and was quite the adventure in itself. Two years later, the project was set to begin in mid Winter. We were bumping out the back of the house on three levels. The process would involve demolishing parts of the back of the hundred year old house, as well as digging out for additional basement space. All I knew is that it was going to be messy. We had to seal off the rooms at the back of the house. Everything in the rooms beyond that would be in the construction zone. That meant we needed some moving storage help for all the stuff in those rooms. In hind site, we probably should have put everything in the house in storage. It was such a mess.
We chose a company that offered moving storage containers that would also store the thing, if we needed. The company delivered it on site. The box was steel and had a big lock. We packed up the kitchen and our master bedroom and took our time moving it out to the storage box. Our original plan was to leave it in the yard until the project was finished, but it became apparent that it would have to move. There was so much construction material and paraphernalia in our dinky yard that the container had to go. We were sad, because we looked forward to just being able to dust that thing off, open the door and unload our belongings back into the house when it was finished. We called the moving storage container people and they were fantastic. They took our storage container within a day of calling them.
We figured that our belongings would be inaccessible once the moving storage company put it in their storage facility. Much to our delight, we were able to get in there by calling 24 hours in advance. The moving storage warehouse was climate controlled and set up with security surveillance cameras. The key to our box was in our hands too. Given that we did not pack things that well, since we thought the storage box was going to live in the backyard, we were able to repack a few things and remove some items.
It is a very good thing our stuff was securely stowed at a moving storage place. Just like the remodeling magazines warn you about, our builders finally finished more than 5 months later than they thought they would. It was hectic enough to just get settled back into the house. So we were not looking forward to the process of bringing that storage container back. Again, the moving storage company made it easy. They dropped off the container, while we were busy mopping and moving things. We were anxious to get our yard back to normal, so hoped that steel container did not have to hang out there long. We scheduled them to take it away that same afternoon. After we unpacked it, we were busy getting settled back in. Later that evening, we noticed our yard was no longer muddled with a big metal moving storage box and construction debris. It is amazing how quickly we forgot all the chaos and inconvenience of construction, as we enjoyed the great new space of our house.
